SDR in the UK : Posted February 2016
NHS England has made the dissapointing announcement that SDR surgery under the 'Commissioning through Evaluation' (CtE) programme will end in March 2016. Further details on the programme are set out below.
It's very frustrating news as families will have to face the uncertainty of waiting for the outome of the CtE report in 2017, or of self funding SDR surgery in the UK.
For everyone involved with Support4SDR our aim remains the availability, without charge, of SDR on the NHS for all suitable candidates, and we will continue to campaign until that is achieved.

Further information
At present SDR is not a routinely commissioned service funded by the NHS.
The NHS say this is due to the current evidence base on clinical and cost effectiveness is insufficient to support routine funding.
For new families who are interested in finding out if their child is suitable for SDR, there are 5 approved centres that perform SDR on a self-funded basis.
Alder Hay Children’s NHS Foundation Trust
Bristol NHS Foundation Trust
Great Ormond Street NHS Foundation Trust
Leeds Teaching Hospital NHS Trust
Nottingham University NHS Trust
For more detail, please speak directly with the hospitals as each differ in their criteria.
Commissioning through Evaluation (CtE)
In July 2014, NHS England, supported by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) set up a programme called Commissioning through Evaluation (CtE) to gather new evidence on treatment that is not currently funded by the NHS.
CtE is a time limited scheme and run in a few participating centres.
The five participating centres approved to perform SDR in the UK are listed above.
The CtE scheme has 2 phases and these are:
Phase 1 : Commenced in July 2014 and ended 31 March 2016
SDR was performed on a number of children in all 5 approved centres. All the centres followed a criteria to assess if a child was a suitable for SDR. During this period post operative children were evaluated at 6, 12 and 24 months and data collated.
Phase 2 : Evaluations will continue post 31 March 2016 on those patients who are part of the CtE scheme. An interim report will be produced and available after July 2017 whereby this is inclusive of patients at 2 year follow up.
